The Exeter climate can be damp in winter. The following measures you can help to avoid condensation.
A common misconception is that mould is caused by damp. Many assume that the damp is coming from outside or beneath their home, most is caused by condensation. The moisture in the air from cooking and showering condenses on colder surfaces such as walls and windows, typically in corners or behind furniture.
Moisture is always present in the air but condensation can be avoided.
Step 1: minimize moisture
- Cover pans and don’t leave kettles boiling.
- Dry washing outside or in a tumble drier.
- Do not attempt to dry wet clothes in rooms.
- Do not dry washing on radiators.
Step 2: ventilate
- Keep a small window ajar when someone is in the room.
- When using the kitchen or bathroom, keep a window open and switch on extractor fans.
Step 3: heat
- Keep your home warm during the winter months.
Treating mould caused by condensation
To prevent and remove mould, it should be removed using fungicide wash while following the appropriate safety precautions. Read instructions carefully and use washing up gloves when cleaning.
Do not brush or vacuum mould: it increases the risk of respiratory problems.
