Laundry

General washing and drying advice.

Washing machines

Most washing machines have a filter where foreign objects become trapped. Clean the filter at least once a month, and and check it if any problems arise with use.

For more information, see the washing machine filter video.

All machines have two or three soap compartments:

  • the left is for the wash cycle
  • the small centre or right compartment is for fabric conditioner
  • any third right compartment is for additional pre-washing.

Clean the soap dispenser frequently to avoid build up of deposits which can clog the machine or leave marks on clothing.

A tablet of Calgon can improve the quality of your wash.

Only powder, liquid, liquid sachets, or tablets for automatic machines should be used. Do not use a general detergent or dish washing liquid: these create excessive bubbles which cause the machine to overflow and block.

Check your operating manual online for more information.

Tumble driers

Remove and clean the filter every time you use the appliance.

Driers with water containers should be emptied before use.

For more information, see this video.

Irons

Always switch off irons when not in use. Do not leave irons face-down on an ironing board if not in use.
