Leaving the property unattended
Whenever the property is left unattended, fasten all door and window locks to prevent unauthorised access to the premises.
Please notify the landlord if you intend to leave the premises vacant for a period of in excess of 21 consecutive days. Please take all reasonable steps to avoid damage from burst pipes during cold weather.
University vacations
During Christmas, Easter and summer breaks:
- Ensure all windows are closed
- Close curtains
- Do not leave valuables in view
- Switch off and unplug all electrical items
- Switch off all taps
- Remove all recycling such as cardboard and bottles
- Do not leave refuse in the property
- Put bins outside for collection
- Clean and tidy all rooms and the garden
- Lock internal doors where possible
- Lock front and back doors
- Leave the heating on low during cold weather to prevent burst pipes
- Switch off the water at the stop cock
The Landlord will inspect the property over this period. Please contact us with a list of maintenance issues that can be rectified while you are away.
Crime
Some student properties will inevitably be exposed to crime. Please take precautions to avoid your property being targeted.
If your property is subject to burglary or an attempted break in, report it to the police immediately and contact us or a recommended service if the incident occurs outside office hours (see your notice board).
To report a crime:
- call 999 for emergencies
- call 101 for non-emergencies
- or use online services
The police will issue you with a crime reference number. This should be retained for future reference and insurance purposes.
